The good spirit of Malinska

The sculpture is made of old acacia wood in the very center of Malinska on the waterfront. The tree was a symbol of the place for decades, when one part of the tree dried up they didn’t know what to do with it and someone suggested to the city authorities to create a sculpture in the dry side of the tree. According to my information, the wood paintings were first sent to the Rijeka Academy of Arts and then to Osijek, but they did not receive a satisfactory proposal. Someone from the town, a student of your academy, had previously been to one of my exhibitions and suggested that they contact me. After they sent me an e-mail with a question and a photo of the tree, after about 5 minutes of looking at the picture I saw an old man with already naturally shaped details. I quickly made a sketch and sent it back to them. We agreed on the details of the job and soon I arrived in Malinska with my team and revived the Good Spirit of Malinska in the old trunk. It was not possible to make a sculpture identical to the proposed sketch because some parts were rotten and we had to change the plan a little. The natural appearance and contours of the wood were very little intervened, the goal was not to see a sculpture in the wood at first, but to intrigue passers-by to look at the wood and notice the spirit in it. The treated part of the wood is not coated with anything, with the intention that over time it will acquire a grayish patina equal to the rest of the wood so that it is not visible that someone has actually processed the wood. After the Good Spirit tree was a tourist attraction for a few years, the living part of the tree also dried up and the tree was sawed down and moved to a new location, some sculpture walk, and from what I heard it was placed in the first place.
